The Ritchey Commando will carry you in style into the unexplored wilderness or home from work." - 1985 Palo Alto/Ritchey Catalog

I think this one is probably an '83 based on the parts and fork. The Commando showed up in the catalogs in '84 so this was probably a pre-cursor to the bike with an official name (and accompanying top tube decal) and all the braze-ons. One could argue that this technically isn't a Commando, but with it's black rims and camo paint I'm sure it inspired the bike that showed up in the catalog the next year.
A photo of this Commando made an appearance in Billy Savage's great movie Klunkerz. Not sure how many of these exist, but they seem to be somewhat rare. I don't know how old this one is, but based on the parts it has on it, I'm guessing 1990ish. I think these forks look pretty cool.

Frame feels light and resilient with a nice ride. Kinda like a Bontrager Race Lite, but a little more laid back. Somewhere I remember hearing these were spec'ed with as many American components as possible. Here's the rundown:

This is the bike that Casey Kunselman rode to the win at the 1988 Cyclo-cross National Championships. As was common in the day, riders put their sponsor's decal on a super-light, aluminum Alan frame which was race proven. This one definitely has battle scars and wear, and when I got it from Casey it only had some of the parts so I added a few to get it back to a complete rig.

Named after the 26,500' mountain in the Himalayas, this was Tom's ultra high-end, "luxury" bike. Tom used this bike to display his legendary and oft-fondled faux lugs. Based on the serial number of 1A4 it looks to be the 4th 21" Annapurna built. Total numbers are not known, but some say less than 100 were made.
This is Steve's 19th bike, made in December of 1982. I got it from Steve, the paint was quite bad so I did the dreadful deed of repainting it. It's got some really unique decals that were designed by Elizabeth Fenimore Cobham (wife of Billy) that only made it on a few of his bikes - I've only seen them on one other. And besides the beautiful fillets and Type I fork, the stem is just so cool. Fillet-brazed, and with a 4-bolt removable face plate it was way ahead of its time. Instead of a quill/wedge setup, it's clamped onto a 7/8" stub that's brazed into the steerer tube, in a way the predecessor to threadless. Parts are the standard hodge-podge for the day with the best stuff from around the world.

Oh, and please excuse the blurry pics. It was my first time with the camera. These will have to do for now, but more to come.
The amazing fillets, subtly scalloped seat collar, flush fork crown and brazed bullmoose provide lots to admire on this. This one's got little "MountainBikes" decals on it from the G. Fisher/Charlie Kelley days. A little too big for me, but still fun to ride. These were sized like road bikes.
JP built and raced these bikes out of San Francisco and still works there currently making parts for motorcycles. I was stoked to find this one and the timing was perfect as I had a friend in Marin that grabbed it for me (but I did have to put up with some ridicule from him and others, for my wanting this contraption). Ha.

This machine's definitely got some cool features but I especially like the stamped-out, steel fork. I know JP Morgen could really ride a bike fast, but for me this is the ultimate bike for leisurely cruises through the mountains - the rougher the better. Maybe I need to ride it more to learn how to ride it hard. It definitely has some unique characteristics.

It seems to work best seated, and it just gobbles up the terrain. With the combined two rear shocks it's probably got 7-8" of travel at the seat. It doesn't really feel like all that travel is there though until you hit a big bump and wonder where it went. It's a fun bike for the quiver and certainly gets attention.
By using a steel rear triangle bolted to the aluminum front triangle he eliminated the soft dropouts, tight tire and chainring clearance caused by fat aluminum tubing, made a light front end and a stiff rear end. A really beautiful frame. I think the front triangle might have been updated/replaced at a later date based on some of the details.

This was the bike of former pro and Team Mantis rider Dan Diaz. I think he had a nickname on the race circuit which is escaping me right now...

The classic So-cal race bike. The Yeti stands apart from other early mountain bikes in that it comes from a BMX heritage while most of the other early mountain bikes were built by roadies from the opposite end of the spectrum. The laid back seat tube, BMX style fork, seat clamp, BMX headset, and loop-tail stays tell the story. Earlier models even had a low BMX cruiser bar and were raced this way at Reseda to Sea and Norba Nationals. Yeti went on to have a huge race presence, arguably being the most famous brand at the races in the late '80s through the mid '90s with a few legendary stars racing for them.

#314, this one is an '86 and made in Malibu, CA before the move to Agoura Hills. FTW told me the "XR" in the serial number indicates that this one probably has a BB shell from a stash of Redline tubing that Parker purchased. This one also has the semi-rare round top tube. It's got a nice business like ride to it - it just wants to get the job done. Not a super supple ride, but it can haul the mail very capably when pushed. And the short 1.25" offset in the fork increases trail and seems to make it stable and quick at the same time.

This one's decked out with some M730, Magura levers, and lots of Cook Bros. stuff which was a sponsor of the team I think in '86 or '87.
A stunning example of a 70's Marin bike. That bike is Repack ready and state of the art @ 1976." - Charlie Kelley, one of the founders of the sport.

I put this Klunker together using an old pre-war Schwinn frame and truss fork I got from a buddy. I liked the straight down tube and support tube on this particular frame. I think it's a Schwinn DX from '39, but not 100% sure on that. Parts include Atom drum brakes, handlebars and brake levers(one was formerly a clutch lever) from a late '70s YZ250, TA Specialties cranks, KKT pedals, first gen. Suntour thumb shifters, Araya rims, Ashtabula neck, a Brooks B72 saddle, a Simplex front derailleur and a Suntour rear derailleur. These take a lot of time because the frame and all the parts have to be modified to work in this application. This is pretty much what was being used in Marin from the mid '70s to about 1980 when purpose built mountain bikes began being built.

Sure is fun to ride!
This one has the number of 18 67 0391. Also one of the first of the five or so Moto SL frames (which stood for Super Light). Ross' famous fillets are on a light tubeset with roller cam bosses and a light unicrown fork. Ross had trouble getting the unicrown blades, which he wanted because they were lighter than his standard fork, but was able to convince Gary Fisher to sell him a rare set of early blades. The bike rides very nicely on tight trails - lively and quick.

The original color was "poof de flage", but was brought in to Ross for a repair in '91 and got a repaint with the midnight blue and the jelly bean treatment. I still have the original pump with the original paint. It had these roller cams on it when I got it, but ideally needs some earlier ones.

The build is fairly light to match the frame with a real lightweight wheelset for its day. The rims are rolled down Wolber Super Champions which were the first rims Keith Bontrager re-rolled. You can see half of the Super Champion sticker is missing in one of the photos from when these became a smaller hoop. The hubs are Dura Ace hubs which at that time already had a freehub. Pretty cool for 1984 and much stronger. Even the stem is lighter than the standard Salsa offering. See Ross' old notes on the bike in the last picture.
I think the ti stem makes the front end a little too noodly. I previously had a stout Syncros stem that kept things a little more solid when pulling on the bars while out of the saddle. Only available in '94, the last year of Suntour as we knew it and their final attempt to compete with Rapid-Fire. Our team bikes had these and I loved them. Bontrager Cyclo-Cross BikeDave Mack's 1984-85 season Cyclo-cross bike used in the Santa Cruz Surf City CX series and the 85 'cross Worlds in Munich Germany. Dave went on to ride for Team Stumpjumper and then went to Ritchey as a rider and later the team manager. I acquired the bike in very poor shape and it needed a repaint, which I hate to do. Anyway, the paint came out darker than the paint sample seemed, but still somewhat close to the original. An ex-Bontrager guy sent me the proper vintage artwork and I had the decals made up.

Keith Bontrager on the bike: "Dave's frames were fairly standard, made to fit him and patterned after some Swiss frames Danny Nall had. That was about the same plan as all of the cross frames I made for the first few years."
Built in November of '88 and the 198th frame Steve built. When I was up at Steve's shop one day he mentioned all the work that went into those old paint jobs and how he'd go the extra mile with a few little techniques to make it come out nicely. I've always really liked his paint, but since then I've admired his paint work even more. I wonder if you could get him to paint a bike today. This one is built up in classic 1988 era stuff. It's got all the neat WTB stuff from the day and even a WTB pump inside the Fixed Angle seat post.
Not my first choice in colors for sure, but the moment I saw this one (I'm not a huge Ultimate fan) I loved it - especially how it represented that early 90's era so well. Here are a few pics of the beast:
