'86 Yeti FRO, #314

The classic Yeti.

The classic So-cal race bike. The Yeti stands apart from other early mountain bikes in that it comes from a BMX heritage while most of the other early mountain bikes were built by roadies from the opposite end of the spectrum. The laid back seat tube, BMX style fork, seat clamp, BMX headset, and loop-tail stays tell the story. Earlier models even had a low BMX cruiser bar and were raced this way at Reseda to Sea and Norba Nationals. Yeti went on to have a huge race presence, arguably being the most famous brand at the races in the late '80s through the mid '90s with a few legendary stars racing for them.

#314, this one is an '86 and made in Malibu, CA before the move to Agoura Hills. FTW told me the "XR" in the serial number indicates that this one probably has a BB shell from a stash of Redline tubing that Parker purchased. This one also has the semi-rare round top tube. It's got a nice business like ride to it - it just wants to get the job done. Not a super supple ride, but it can haul the mail very capably when pushed. And the short 1.25" offset in the fork increases trail and seems to make it stable and quick at the same time.

This one's decked out with some M730, Magura levers, and lots of Cook Bros. stuff which was a sponsor of the team I think in '86 or '87.
